How to Find a Job at a Young Age

Save

Finding a job at a young age can seem like a difficult task, especially if you have never really looked for one before. You may feel lost and not know where to turn for employment. Your first job can be a very important one, as you can use it as a tool and an opening to a better position. Starting to work at a young age is a major responsibility and teaches you a lot of value.

  • Keep your parents or guardians at home. While they can be a very valuable tool to help you along the way, you need to go hunt for a job on your own. Your family can be a great resource if you feel stuck and don't know where to turn, but when you are filling out applications and going to interviews leave them at home.

  • Ask your current or former school for resources. Colleges are a great resource, as well as high schools, when seeking help to find that first job. Schools can assess your qualities and help point you in the right direction when looking for employment. They may also know of upcoming job fairs and places to apply. Also, many colleges and high schools have job boards on campus and/or online.

  • Avoid finding the perfect job. Most likely at your age you will not keep a job for a lifetime. If you get a job offer, take it. It may not be your dream job, but it will help you gain the skills you need to gain employment down the road. Also, don't get discouraged if you are turned down.

  • Stay honest in job interviews. You have to keep in mind that it is okay to say this is your first job. Let them know you may not have the prior experience, but you are always willing to learn new things and gain skills. Employers understand that people need to start somewhere.

  • Start networking. Just by going out and talking to friends, family and potential employers, and telling them you are looking for a job, may help you land a great job. Networking is one of the best tools in finding a job, and you will be using this skill your entire career.
