How to Hang a Glass Sconce

Glass sconces are stylish decorating choices, either for lighting, or to display art or other pieces. They also come in a wide range of styles--some just all glass, others combining glass with metals. Most sconces include their own mounting, which sometimes requires drilling holes in the actual glass sconce itself. The alternative is to use a high-tech adhesive, which--when combined with a complementary stand-off post and bracket system--will hold more than 25 pounds. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place the positioning templates identically on each corner of the sconce and place a dot in the center of the hole with a marking pen.

    • 2

Attach a stand-off at each corner, over the dot, using the special adhesive you've prepared by following the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 3

Measure the position on the wall where the four brackets will be fixed, and mark them with the pen. Check that the top and bottom positions are in horizontal alignment, using a spirit level.

    • 4

Drill four holes in the wall through the pen marks and insert the hollow wall anchors (mollies) supplied with the kit.

    • 5

Screw the four brackets into each of the four holes.

    • 6

Hang the sconce by placing the stand-offs into the wall brackets.

Tips & Warnings

  • The kit contains enough adhesive to mount at least 25 sconces. You can save money by just purchasing extra stand-offs and brackets to mount additional sconces.

  • Before you hang a glass sconce, make sure you've chosen a location where the likelihood of the glass being struck by someone walking past is minimal. A location 7 feet up from the floor is a good, safe position.

  • If the glass sconce is to decorate a light fitting, it's vital to turn off the power to the area before starting work to avoid accidental electrocution.
