How to Trade Items Online

Save

The popularity of Internet trading communities like eBay and Craigslist has helped people become more comfortable with Internet retail or the trade of goods and services online. These marketplaces are operated like online bazaars, garage sales or flea markets, and include trade in a wide range of items like appliances, art, automobiles, books, clothing, computers, games and music. In addition to cash transaction trading, there are growing numbers of barter or swap online trading communities where members can exchange items for non-cash items and services.

Online Trading

  • Identify online trading communities. A simple Web browser search will recover a large number of trading communities. EBay is one of the best known and most successful online trading websites. Caretotrade.com, SwapTree.com and TrashBank.com are smaller online trading websites where goods and services can be traded or swapped.

  • Read the fine print before joining an online trading community because each trading website has different governing rules. Understand the applicable membership rules, transaction fees, return policies and dispute resolution system. Membership in an online trading or bartering community will generally require that the new member enter a contractual agreement to abide by the existing trading rules.

  • Look for a feedback or trade history feature before joining an online trading community. Feedback and trade history information provide valuable insight that makes transactions more reliable and traders more accountable to each other in these virtual transactions.

  • Adequately describe the product or service to be traded. Exaggerated descriptions by a seller may result in unfavorable feedback at the end of the transaction. Success as an online trader will be based on building a good reputation for reliability and honesty.

  • Insure that packaging and shipping terms and costs are clearly written alongside the traded item's description. Know transportation-cost estimates before creating the trade listing. This will avoid potential disputes and insure that profits are not consumed by the seller's transaction costs. Set up an efficient system for packaging goods. The United States Postal Service (USPS) has partnered with eBay to provide co-branding shipping boxes. Also, the trading party will typically look for the item's delivery within three to seven days.
