How to Copy a DVD to AVI
Copying DVDs to AVI files is a good way to backup movies or home DVD recordings. There are several free programs for creating AVI files from DVDs, but DVDShrink (for ripping DVDs to your computer) and AutoGK (for converting the video to AVI) are two valuable ones (see Resources). You will also need a DivX or Xvid codec to encode the AVI files. You will also need enough space on your computer to contain the files (up to 7.95 GB for a single-sided, dual-layer DVD).
Instructions
-
Rip DVD to Computer

Convert Ripped DVDs to AVI
-
4
Open AutoGK. Click the folder icon by "Input File" and browse for the video you ripped from the DVD.
-
5
Click the folder icon by "Output File" to change the output folder and file name--if you wish.
-
6
Choose an output size for your AVI file. Generally, 350 MB is a decent quality for a 1-hour TV show and 1400 MB is a decent quality for a movie. (Note that the sizes are based on disc sizes; if you choose "1400 MB (2 CDs)," your video will be split into two 700 MB files.)

7
Click "Add Job" to add the conversion to your queue. Repeat steps 1 through 3 to add more videos, or click "Start" to convert. A window may pop up; click "OK" to start the conversion.
