How to Customize a GNOME Desktop in Linux

Gnome is a Linux desktop environment and software collection. The desktop part of Gnome provides the look and feel of the user interface, while the software collection provide you with tools to manage the operating system and the desktop environment. Just as with Windows, you can change the background, theme, or various effects of Gnome. Gnome also includes the option to use Compiz to manage 3D effects on your desktop.

Instructions

  1. Background image

    • 1

      Go to the "System" menu on the top of your desktop. Go to "Preference" and then click on "Appearance".

      In the new window, click on the "Background" tab. Choose the picture you want to have as your background.

      Add the picture you choose to be the default by clicking "ADD" and browsing to the picture you want to add. Click "Open" to add it to the available image.

    Theme

      Go to www.gnome-look.org and select a theme you would like to use on your computer. Be sure to download a theme that is compatible with your version of Gnome.

      Download the theme file and save it to your desktop.

      Click on the "System" menu, hover over the "Preference" option and click on "Appearance". Click on the "Install" button on the lower right on the window.

      Browse to your desktop and select the file you just downloaded. Click on "Open." Choose if you want to apply the theme now or later.

    Compiz

      Go to the "System" menu, choose "Preference" and click on "Desktop Effects"

      Click on "Enable Desktop Effects" and select if you want the Windows to wobble when moved and/or use "Workspaces on a Cube."

      To rotate the cube press the "Alt" + "Ctrl" keys and move your mouse to rotate. Each face has a separate desktop.

Tips & Warnings

  • Go to http://wiki.compiz.org/CompizPlugins for more plug-ins for Compiz.

  • Compiz requires a video card handling the 3D effect and the latest drivers
