How to Customize a Windows Internet Explorer Bar

Microsoft's Internet Explorer web browser allows users to surf the web using multiple tabs, save pages using bookmarks and conduct searches directly from the browser's toolbar. Users can also change or customize the appearance of the toolbar in Internet Explorer 8 to adapt the browser's interface to the user's preferences. By changing the appearance of the toolbar and by adding or removing Internet Explorer add-ons, you can make your web surfing experience personalized and convenient.

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet Explorer 8
  1. Step 1

    Open Internet Explorer on your computer. A shortcut for the browser may be located on your desktop or in the Windows toolbar. The program is also located inside the "All Programs" menu in the "Start" menu.

  2. Step 2

    Right-click within the Internet Explorer bar at the top of the screen. Select the "Customize" option.

  3. Step 3

    Select the "Use Large Icons" option to increase the size of the toolbar icons. Deselect this option to use smaller icons.

  4. Step 4

    Select the "Show Stop and Refresh Buttons Before Address Bar" option to change the location of these two buttons. Selecting the option will place the buttons to the left of the address bar. Deselecting this option will place the buttons to the right of the address bar.

  5. Step 5

    Select the "Show All Text Labels" option to have a description of toolbar icons appear in the IE bar. Select the "Show Selective Text" option to have only a few icons appear with text. Select the "Show Only Icons" options to have icons appear in your toolbar without text.

  6. Step 6

    Select the "Add or Remove Commands" option to select which icons appear in your toolbar. Highlight options in the menu on the left-hand side and click on the "Add" button to add the button to your toolbar. Highlight options on the right side and select the "Move Up" or "Move Down" options to change the position of the icon. Click the "Remove" button to remove the button from your toolbar.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep the icons you use the most in your toolbar for easy access.
  • Remove icons you rarely use from your toolbar to remove clutter from your browser.
