How to Finish a Fleece Throw

Fleece is one of the most forgiving fabrics to work with. Not only is it soft against the skin, it doesn't unravel or show raw edges so it needs no hemming. Fleece comes in a variety of textures, colors, and patterns. To make a full-size blanket, you'll want two yards.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the piece of fabric in half so that you have a rectangle that is now 30 inches wide and 2 yards long.

    • 2

Lay the fabric on a flat surface with the narrow end toward you.

    • 3

Set the yard stick about 5 inches from the edge and use the heavy books to hold it in place.

    • 4

Using the yard stick as a guide, cut through both thicknesses of fabric making 1 1/2-inch wide strips 5 inches long. Cut fold to make your last two strips.

    • 5

Repeat at other end of the blanket.

    • 6

Unfold the blanket and starting at one end, tie two adjacent strips together in a knot that is loose enough not to pull the blanket out of shape. Continue down the edge, tying the next two strips together, and so on until you have a knotted fringe.

Tips & Warnings

  • An alternative to tying fringe would be to cut a freehand scalloped edge around the blanket and zigzag around it with your sewing machine.
