How to Recover a Bike Seat

If your bike seat has become worn out or if you want to customize the seat to better fit your personality, you don't have to take the bike to a shop to get the task done. This is a project that you can do for yourself. You can choose material to replace your old bicycle seat cover from your local fabric store. Be sure to purchase a material that is water resistant, so that it can properly withstand the elements of nature.

  • Staple remover

      Remove the bolts that are securing the bottom of your bike seat to the seat post.

      Lift the bike seat off of the post to remove it. Lay the bike seat on its back.

      Remove any staples that are securing the cover to the seat. If your seat cover does not have staples, just lift the old cover from the seat. You may have to use a knife or scissors to pry up some of the cover.

      Lay the new cover material on a flat working surface. Lay the bike seat on top of the new material. The bike seat should be on its back.

      Pull the material up so that it is securely wrapped around the bike seat. Use a marker to mark the point where the excess material begins.

      Cut away the excess material with a scissors.

      Pull the material up around the bike seat. Be sure the material is pulled tight.

      Staple the material to the seat. If you don't have a staple gun, you can use a strong adhesive

      Replace the bike seat onto the bike's seat post. Replace and tighten the seat post screws to secure the seat.
