How to Fix a Blank Screen on a Compaq Computer

If your Compaq computer presents nothing but a blank screen when you push the "Power" button, it is important to determine the source of the problem. There are a number of issues that could cause your PC to display a blank screen, and working through those possible causes one at a time is the best way to get your computer back in service as quickly as possible.

Things You'll Need

  • Compaq computer
  • Monitor
  • Small screwdriver set
  • Listen to the computer after you press the "Power" button. If you do not hear any beeps or other noises, the power supply may have failed.

  • Remove your computer's cover by locating and removing the retaining screws on the back of the case and pulling the case-release lever. For tower-type computers, the case-release lever will probably be located on the side. For desktop computers, the release lever should be on the top.

  • Locate the power supply in the back corner of the computer case and the fan next to that power supply. If the fan is not spinning, the power supply will need to be replaced.

  • Locate the CMOS button on your computer's motherboard. Press the CMOS button down and hold it for five to 10 seconds, then restart your computer. If your power supply is good, resetting the CMOS may restore the video.

  • Connect another monitor to your computer. If the video appears on the new monitor, you know that your monitor is the problem.
