Fur boots come in several different styles and properly caring for them is essential to help make them last for years to come. Whether your boots are authentic Mukluks, fur-lined or faux fur, consider some steps to take to keep your fashionable and warm footwear in tip-top shape.
Things You'll Need
- Original shoebox or breathable storage area
- Leather or suede cleaner with brush
- Nail file
- Hard bristle brush
- Soft bristle brush
- Cornmeal (optional)
- Talcum powder (optional)
If your fur boots are leather, first treat them with a spray-on waterproofing protector or try beeswax or mink oil products. For suede and nubuck fur boots, use specially designed products such as Kiwi Multi Purpose Protector or Suede and Nubuck Cleaner. Take care not to spray the fur.
To clean dirty or wet fur, shake the excess moisture off the fur and blot gently with a towel. Let the fur air dry completely. Never brush the fur because it could fall out. If your fur boots cannot be cleaned successfully, take them to a trusted fur specialist at a dry cleaner.
To remove dirt trapped in the boot treads, use a nail file to dig out dirt chunks. Use a hard bristle brush to clean the bottoms completely. Take care not to brush the leather or fur, since you could damage the material. To brush a suede or leather boot, use a soft bristle brush designed for soft leather to gently clean any dirt. Brush with the grain to raise the nap.
Oil stains may be permanent. Try to gently buff cornmeal or talcum powder on the spots to clean and minimize. Repeat as necessary.
Tips & Warnings
- Store your fur boots in their original box or in an area that is cool and dry, where they won’t touch other shoes and crush the fur.
- Never store your fur boots in plastic or use mothballs. Plastic can cause the boots to have a bad odor, while mothballs are poisonous and smell.
