How to Put My Mail Icon in Mozilla Firefox

Save

If you use a web-based email account while browsing the Internet with Mozilla Firefox, you can reduce the amount of time required to access your email. Rather than typing the name of the email site, a simple Firefox add-on makes it possible to access your mail with one click.

  • Open a Firefox browser window and browse to the "Get Mail" download page listed in the "Resources" section of this article.

  • Click the "Install" link to install the add-on. Click the "Allow" button if a security warning appears, then click "Install Now".

  • Click "Restart Firefox" when the installation is complete. When Firefox reloads, a window appears confirming that the add-on was successfully installed.

  • Click the "Options" button under the Get Mail add-on.

  • Put a check in the "Hide Read Mail Menu" box, and remove the check from the "Hide Get Web Mail Menu" box.

  • Click the radio button to indicate whether you would like your web-mail provider's page to open in a new window or a new tab.

  • Type the address of the web-mail provider in the box labeled "Set path to Web Mail", i.e. "http://mail.google.com" for Gmail.

  • Click "OK" to close the window.

  • Click "View" at the top of the Firefox window, then click "Toolbars" and "Customize".

  • Drag the Get Mail icon from the "Customize Toolbar" window to any area on the Firefox toolbar--for example, next to the "Home" icon. Click "Done."

  • Click the Get Mail icon, then click "Get Web Mail" to open a new tab or window to your web-mail provider's website.

Tips & Warnings

  • In addition to browsing directly to your web-mail host, Get Mail has the ability to launch a standalone email client application with one click. From the Get Mail options screen, click the "Hide Get Web Mail Menu" check box and remove the check from the "Hide Read Mail Menu" box. Click the "Browse" button, navigate to the location of your email application, and double-click it. Click "OK" to finalize the change.
