How to Restore Files on a Computer Hit By Lightning

The massive surge of power contained within a lightning strike can wreak havoc on an unguarded PC or a PC guarded with a less expensive surge protector. It can cause file deletion or corruption through hard drive damage. Although there is no guarantee that you will be able to restore any files lost from a lightning strike, there are some basic steps you can take to ensure that what is recoverable is salvaged.

Instructions

    • 1

Utilize the CheckDisk utility on your computer to scan the hard drive and attempt to repair some of the damage. Enable this utility by accessing the "Start" menu, then pressing the "Run" button. Type "chkdsk" (without quotes) in the textbox, then press "Enter." The CheckDisk utility will run through three separate phases of disk checking to salvage your files.

    • 2

Utilize system restore points to turn back time before the lightning strike. Accomplish this by going to the "Start" menu, then to the "Programs List," then to the folder named "Accessories." System restore is located inside the folder named "System Tools."

    • 3

Run "System Restore" by clicking on the program file. Select a "Restore Point" from the calender of available points. Choose a point that is prior to the lightning strike but not too much farther back as you do not want to reverse your system any more than is necessary. Follow the remainder of the on-screen instructions to complete the process, after which a reboot will be necessary.
