How to Measure Ball Cap Size
Good ball caps often come in non-adjustable sizes, without Velcro or plastic straps. You can find out your hat size by trying on hats in a store, but what if you need to know your size to buy a cap online? Or what if you're buying a cap as a gift? You need to accurately measure the head in question to get a perfect fit--even an eighth of an inch off can make a hat feel too loose or too tight. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions

1
Place a flexible tape measure--the kind used for measuring fabric--around your head at the level where you like your hat to rest. If you are not sure where to place the tape, put on a comfortable ball cap and note where the sweat band hits your forehead.
-
2
Make sure the tape measure doesn't cross the ears, and hold the tape firmly.

-
3
Measure to the closest 1/8-inch. If you measure yourself, use a mirror for accuracy.
-
4
Use an online hat size chart to convert the measurement from inches to hat size. The average size for a men's hat is 7 1/4, which is equivalent to 22 3/4 inches.

Tips & Warnings
If you don't have a flexible tape measure, wrap a string around your head at the same place, mark it and then measure the string.
Lids.com offers a downloadable measuring tape with hat sizes printed on it.
Never measure an old adjustable ball cap to determine hat size. Not all hats are made to fit the same way, so such a measurements will not be helpful.
