How to Enlarge Patterns for Painting

You can enlarge any pattern for painting, expanding the number of subjects you paint no matter what medium you use. Methods to enlarge patterns comprise scanning and computer software, copy machines, overhead projectors and the grid method. Use the grid method as the most economical way to enlarge patterns. Draw lines over the pattern, then duplicate the pattern onto a larger grid.

Instructions

  1. The Grid Method

    • 1

Place a ruler at the top of the pattern. Make hatch marks--small dots or short lines--at even intervals across the top of the pattern. Repeat this process on the bottom of the pattern. Be sure to mark the pattern bottom at the same intervals as the top.

    • 2

Place a ruler at the side of the pattern. Make hatch marks down the side the same distance apart as the marks on the top of the pattern. Repeat the process on the other side of the pattern. Mark the second side at the same intervals as the first.

    • 3

Draw vertical lines to connect the top and bottom hatch marks. Make horizontal lines to connect the hatch marks on each side.

    • 4

Count the squares across the top and down the side. Write down the number of squares going in each direction.

    • 5

Measure the height and width of the canvas you will transfer the image to.

    • 6

Divide the top measurement by the number of squares along the top of the pattern to determine the distance between the hatch marks on the canvas. The hatch marks will be the same on all sides of the canvas.

    • 7

Sketch what you see in each square on the gridded pattern onto the canvas. As you copy each square, the pattern will clarify.

    • 8

Begin painting once all the squares have been sketched from the pattern to the canvas.

Tips & Warnings

  • Measure the size of the canvas and compare it to the pattern. By dividing the length of each side into the length of the corresponding sides on the canvas, you will determine an appropriate grid line for the entire pattern.
