How to Build a Cat Tunnel

If you own a cat, you know how inquisitive it is. Cats will crawl into any dark crevice or climb into any open cabinet. Cats love enclosed spaces and are capable of going into small areas that a person would think an animal as large as a cat could not get into. Cats are masters at hiding. Providing a homemade tunnel for a cat to play and hide in is a fun project for you and, when completed, will provide endless hours of enjoyment for the cat.

Instructions

  1. A Cat Tunnel Made from Plywood

    • 1

Place two screws in one of the angle brackets 1 inch from the 8 inch side (short side) and over one of the 8 x 36 inch pieces of 1/2 inch plywood on the long side of the board. Place another bracket over the same edge 1 inch from the other short side and screw down with two screws. On the same piece of plywood, install two more brackets on the other long side of the board. There should be four brackets hanging down 1 inch from each corner of the 8 x 36 inch board on each long side of the board.

    • 2

Fasten the remaining two 8 x 36 inch pieces of 1/2 inch plywood to the remaining open sides of the brackets, lining the pieces up so that the brackets are on the outside of the boards and the boards are even with each other. When the boards are connected with the brackets, there should be a three-sided structure that, when turned upside down, forms a tunnel.

    • 3

Sand all edges smooth. Paint with non-toxic paint.

Tips & Warnings

  • Fasten a piece of carpet around the box to provide a scratching post as well as a tunnel.

  • Use an old wooden toy box and take the top off or fasten it down. Cut holes in the sides to form a tunnel.
