How to Dispose of Old Tires

One of the responsibilities of owning a car is disposing of the tires in an environmentally friendly fashion. You don't want to just dump them in a landfill, particularly because they take years to decompose, and some states have even banned tires from landfills. Many companies can reuse the rubber in tires for other important uses. Keep that in mind because piling tires in a yard can attract pests, and burning tires is hazardous to the environment.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your department of public works or the government office that is responsible for maintaining the roads in your city. Ask if the department would like your tires; sometimes tires are deconstructed and used to make the tar for roads.

    • 2

Call or visit the store where you bought your tires. Stores often have a system of disposing old tires and they'll most likely take care of yours, either for free or a small fee. Alternately, they might require that you buy a new tire before they get rid of your old one.

    • 3

Contact local schools and inquire if they could use the tires in their playgrounds--for example, as swings. Also when calling, ask school officials for the name of the company that made their playground mats, which are made out of black rubber. Contact that company and ask if it would like your old tires.

Contact your local recycling center. If it doesn't accept tires, the employee can probably refer you to a place that does.

    • 5

Contact your local municipality. Some cities provide "tire amnesty" and will not charge you to drop off a certain number of tires.
