How to Make a Gun Barrel Rest
Gun barrel rests are designed to provide a stable and secure location for the barrel to rest when you are hunting or shooting at targets. A secure rest is necessary to prevent excessive movement during sighting so that incremental adjustments may be made to scopes and sights. There are many types of barrel rests available for purchase, but it is also possible to make custom rests.

1
Select a heavy canvas material such as duck cloth or painters canvas. Make sure the material is durable and able to withstand use in the field.
-
2
Determine the size of the rests based on the surface area on which the gun will be placed when shooting. Also consider whether one bag or several will be made.

3
Use scissors to cut a large square or rectangle from the material. Keep in mind that the material will be folded in half to form the rest, and will be filled with cushioned weight later. Cut the material to ensure the rest will be large enough.

4
Fold the shape in half. Turn the material inside out, and sew with heavy cotton thread. If using a sewing machine, follow the manufacturers instructions. Begin by sewing at one end of the fold and sew around the shape toward the other end of the fold. Hand stitch by pushing the needle and thread through the material, keeping the stitches small and close together.

5
Leave several inches of the shape unsewn and turn it inside out again. The stitching will now be on the inside of the formed rest. Fill the rest with a mixture of sand and dried corn or beans. The sand will provide weight, while the dried corn or beans will cushion and form around the barrel of a gun. Sew the rest all the way to the fold and tie the thread off to finish.
