How to Put Chains on Tires for a Snowblower
Tire chains aid a snowblower by helping the machine climb grades more easily and with less slippage. Snow chains improve traction on snow and ice. Snow chains often are considered mandatory equipment for these machines. The chains are usually sold in pairs for the convenience of buyers. Follow a few key steps to properly affix them to a snowblower. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Attach the chains before the first snowfall of the year so the machine will be ready for when it is needed.
-
2
Place one chain over the top of each tire. Center them so that they are hanging over the front and back of the tire in equal proportions.
-
-
3
Insert the front end of the chains as far under tires as possible.
-
4
Start up the snowblower and put it into the lowest (and slowest) gear. Move the machine forward 1 foot. Put the snowblower in neutral gear and turn it off.
-
5
Locate the lead end of the tire chain which should now have traveled under the tire and be sticking out the back. Connect this end to the other end of the chain still draped over the top of the tire. Most chains have simple hooks or clasps for this purpose.

6
Put the snowblower back in low gear and drive for a dozen feet making sure the chains fit snugly. If they appear secure, tighten the chain.
