How to Donate RAM Chips
RAM (Random Access Memory) is one of the most important--and interchangeable--parts in a computer. All computers need RAM, and the more your machine has, the faster it will run. So if you're upgrading your computer and have extra RAM, it's a great idea to donate it to a school, shelter or nonprofit, where it can help speed up computers. Also, it's easy to do.

1
Turn your computer off and disconnect the power cord. Open the case.
-
2
Touch a grounded metal object to discharge static electricity from your body; static electricity can damage RAM. Locate and remove the RAM. It should be a long, waferlike object sticking out of the motherboard. There should be little levers on the ends of the RAM; push these down and away from the RAM, and that should lever it out of the board. Place the RAM in a static-proof bag.

3
Find somewhere to donate the RAM to. If you have a particular charity or school in mind, call and ask whether it accepts donations of computer parts.

There are also computer refurbishers that specifically donate hardware to nonprofits and schools. Look up refurbishers in your area and contact them to see what kind of equipment they accept and where it goes. Below there are links to help you find such organizations.

5
Take the RAM to the recipients.
