How to Download One World Tree

One World Tree is a service of Ancestry.com--a giant collective family tree, stitched together by member-submitted family trees and historical records. While not guaranteed to be accurate, One World Tree can make researching your ancestors much easier. Naturally, with a database that large, you can't download the entire tree--but you can download portions of it.

Instructions

    • 1

Search for a person of your choice in the One World Tree. Click on the correct name in the list of search results.

    • 2

Click the "Download GEDCOM" link, if there is one. Some submitters of information decline to allow their trees to be downloaded, in which case the link will not appear. If there is a link, however, this will allow you to download a GEDCOM file of the selected person's family tree. A GEDCOM file (with the extension .ged) is a family tree format used by many different brands of genealogy software.

    • 3

A page offering you different download options will appear. You can choose whether to download the person's ancestors or descendants, how many generations you want to download and how to format the file's end-of-line characters.

    • 4

Click the "Download" button, which will produce a file according to the specifications you provided. Alternately, you can click the "Download full GEDCOM as a ZIP file" link, which will give you the entire user-submitted tree. Save the file and open it in the genealogy program of your choice.
