How to Use Rubber Mulch Around a Pool
Although it's more expensive up front, using rubber mulch around a pool is more beneficial in the long run, as it does not have to be replaced every year like wood mulch. Rubber mulch comes in a variety of colors and the coloring lasts up to 20 years (depending on the process used for the brand of much you purchase). Rubber mulch does not retain moisture, and it does not produce leachate (a toxin). It does not rot or decay. Does this Spark an idea?

Remove all wooden mulch or other landscaping material from the area to be treated with rubber mulch. Dig the area out to make sure all roots are removed (3 to 4 inches). If the area has grass, dig the grass away. Dig into the ground 3 to 4 inches, ensuring all roots are removed.

Layer three to four layers of newspaper on the area to be treated with rubber mulch. Cover the newspaper with weed barrier. Layer 2 inches of sand over the newspaper and weed barrier.

Landscape the edge of the area with plastic edging, bricks or other landscaping material (optional).

Spread the rubber mulch around the prepared area, at least 2 inches deep.
