How to Make a Cold & Flu Broth

Winter weather can mean nasty colds and flu, but this cold & flu broth recipe should definitely help the next time you aren't feeling well. It includes garlic, leeks, scallions, and onions, which are all part of the vegetable family "Allium" and each contain many of the same beneficial properties for fighting infection in the body.

Things You'll Need

  • Medium-sized pot
  • One tbsp. each of chopped garlic, ginger, scallions, leeks
  • One small onion, chopped
  • One tsp. sage
  • One quart water

Instructions

    • 1

      Measure 1 tablespoon each of leeks, scallions, ginger, and chopped garlic and pour them into a cooking pot.

      Chop one small onion and add it to the pot.

    • 3

      Add 1 teaspoon of sage and 1 quart of water to the pot.

      Simmer for 30 minutes. Remember to stir ingredients occasionally so they do not burn.

Tips & Warnings

  • Leeks contain a good amount of oxalate, a naturally occurring substance found in plants, animals and humans. Too much of it can crystallize in the body causing health problems, so those prone to kidney and gallbladder issues should avoid leeks in large quantities.
