How to Darken Curtains
Curtains can add decorative charm to any room, but they can have a functional purpose, too. Curtains can provide privacy, block out light and even insulate a room against the heat or cold. When looking for curtains to darken a room, look for curtains with a special room-darkening liner. Many times the selection of such curtains is limited, so this article will explain how to darken any curtains you might have. Things You'll Need
- Pre-made curtains
- Curtain lining fabric
- Seam ripper
- Straight pins
- Sewing machine
- Scissors
- Needle & thread
- Measuring tape

Lay the curtain panel face down on a flat surface. Using the seam ripper, carefully remove the seams on both sides and the bottom of the curtain. Be sure to leave the top seam intact. Measure the length and width of the curtain.

Lay the curtain lining fabric on a flat surface. Measure out a piece of fabric the same size as the measurements taken from the curtain. Cut out the fabric and lay the liner on top of the face-down curtain panel.

Carefully fold both the curtain and the liner over the back of the curtain to recreate the original seam. Use the straight pins to hold the fabric in place. Repeat this on both sides and the bottom of the curtain. At the top of the curtain, pin the lining fabric along the seam just below the rod pocket or tabs.

Using the sewing machine, sew along both sides and the bottom of the curtain to close the seams. At the top seam, carefully sew along the orginial seam to attach the liner to the curtain. Remove all straight pins and repeat steps 1-4 for each curtain panel.
