How to Create Links in PDF From Word

PDF files are convenient for distributing information through the Internet, and this is partly due to the fact that you can add clickable links to a PDF file. When a viewer reads your file and comes across a factoid, it is helpful to have a link to reference. Create your document in Microsoft Word first, add links in Word and then convert it to PDF format in just a few simple steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a document in Microsoft Word. Select the first word or phrase that you want to appear as a link.

    • 2

Right-click the selection and choose "Hyperlink" from the list of options. This is the tool that allows you to create a clickable link in Word. An "Edit Hyperlink" dialog box will pop up.

    • 3

Type in the full address where you want the user to go when he clicks the link. The link may not work properly if you don't add the "http://" at the beginning.

    • 4

Click "Target Frame" inside of the "Edit Hyperlink" box. Choose "New Window" from the drop-down list of options. Click "OK" to confirm the link---it will appear as a blue underlined word or phrase in your document. Save the Word file.

    • 5

Click the "Acrobat" tab on your Microsoft Word main menu. Select "Create PDF" from the toolbar. Allow Word and Acrobat to work together to process your PDF document.

    • 6

Open the PDF file in Adobe Acrobat or Reader to test the links. Click them to assure that they open correctly---if you typed in the wrong address by accident, you can always go back to the original Word file, modify the link address using the same instructions from above and convert the file to PDF again.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also add clickable links to images in Word that will be converted to PDF format. Click "Insert" then "Picture" to deposit it to your document, and then right-click the image to add a hyperlink as described in Step 2.
