Adding one ingredient from your kitchen cupboard while painting a homemade sign can give it a rusty look. To create a faux rusty tin sign, sprinkle some cinnamon on the areas that you want to look weathered.
Step 1
Paint the surface of the piece of tin with a base coat of craft paint, which will serve as the background color of your rusty sign.

Sprinkle a little dried cinnamon over the background area while the paint is still wet to create the look of rust. Allow the paint to dry completely.
Step 3
Create the message on the sign. Use stencils, trace a design with a pencil or freehand the wording for your sign.
Step 4
Paint the message on the tin sign with a brush. Use a craft paint that will contrast with the background color you chose in Step 1. For example, many signs have red words on a white background.
Step 5
Sprinkle cinnamon over the sign's message before the paint dries if you want to add rust spots to this area.
Step 6
Drill a hole in each of the upper corners to string a wire and hang from a wall or beam.
