How to Change Jeep Rubicon Transfer Case Fluid
You should change the oil in the transfer case of your Jeep Wrangler Rubicon as part of a regular maintenance program. Jeep recommends that you change the ATF+4 transfer case oil in your Rubicon NV241 transfer case every 30,000 miles. Mopar ATF+4 is available at the Jeep dealer and some auto parts stores. While there are other types of fluid that may work, this is the only fluid recommended by Jeep, and using something else may affect your warranty.
Things You'll Need
- Wheel chocks
- Drain pan
- 18 mm socket
- 10 mm Allen head socket
- Ratchet
- Bottle pump
- ATF+4 (2 quarts)
Instructions
-
-
1
Chock the wheels on your Jeep so that it cannot roll or move while you are under it. Locate the four bolts that hold the transfer skid plate to the bottom of your Jeep.
-
2
Remove the four retaining bolts from the skid plate using an 18 mm socket and ratchet. Lower the skid plate down and remove it from under the Jeep.
-
-
3
Position a drain pan under the transfer case to catch the old fluid as you drain it. Any clean bucket or drain pan will work to catch the fluid.
-
4
Locate the drain and fill caps on the back of the transfer case. Remove the fill plug using a 10 mm Allen head socket and set it aside for now.
-
5
Remove the drain plug from the transfer case using a 10 mm Allen head socket and ratchet. Set the plug aside and allow the fluid to drain from the transfer case until all the fluid stops running out of the drain hole.
-
6
Reinstall the drain plug into the drain hole of the transfer case and tighten it with a 10 mm socket and ratchet. Torque the plug to 20 foot-pounds with a torque wrench.
-
7
Install the bottle pump onto one of the quarts of ATF+4 transmission fluid. Insert the tubing that is connected to the pump into the fill hole and start filling the transfer case with fluid.
-
8
Fill the transfer case until the fluid starts to trickle out of the fill hole of the transfer case. The Jeep must be level when filling the case, or the level will not be correct.
-
9
Install the fill plug and tighten it with the 10 mm Allen head socket. Torque the plug to 20 foot-pounds with a torque wrench.
-
10
Raise the transfer case skid plate into position and reinstall the four retaining bolts that hold the transfer case in place. Tighten the bolts using an 18 mm socket and ratchet until it is secure.

Tips & Warnings
Disposing of the used fluid correctly is important. Most auto parts stores have programs to accept used oil and transmission fluid for little or no cost. Check with the auto parts stores to find out who can take yours.
