How to Remove Permanent Marker From Vinyl in a Boat
Permanent marker stains can feel like a nightmare, especially on such an expensive investment like a boat. And with children who are active and creative, marker stains can almost be inevitable. With a few products from your kitchen cabinets and your bathroom drug cabinet, you have a cleaning kit at your fingertips when your surfaces get tagged. Things You'll Need
- Clean cotton cloths
- 3M Scotch-Brite sponge/cleaning pad
- Vinegar
- Rubbing alcohol
- Dish detergent
- Ammonia-based cleaning agent
- Nail polish remover
- Toothpaste

Mix 1 tbsp. of vinegar, 1 tbsp. of dish detergent and 2 cups of warm water together. Dampen a 3M Scotch-Brite sponge with the mixed solution and scrub at the stain. Leave the solution on the stain for five to 10 minutes, and scrub at the stain again. If you do not have vinegar, use an ammonia-based cleaner like Windex.

Moisten a clean cotton cloth with dab of rubbing alcohol and scrub the stain in a circular motion. Leave the alcohol on the stain for five to 10 minutes, and wipe off with another clean cloth dampened with warm water.

Pour about 2 tbsp. of nail polish remover on the marker stain and leave it to sit for about five minutes. Blot the wet spot with a cotton cloth dampened with warm water. Use a non-acetone remover, because high acetone levels can melt or damage vinyl.

Scrub the stain away with a whitening toothpaste applied to a clean cloth dampened with warm water.

If you don't feel comfortable using these home-created solutions, pick up a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Sponge from the cleaning aisle of your local grocery store. Dampen the sponge with warm water and scrub the marker stain in a circular pattern.

Tips & Warnings
Clean any oils off the surface of the marker stain. This will allow the solution you choose to work faster on the stain.

The easiest way to get rid of permanent marker from vinyl is to get a non-permanent (Dry-erase) marker. Take one and write over the permanent marker. Then get a damp cloth and wipe away both the permanent and non-permanent marker off the vinyl. Try this in a small area first and if it succeeds, do it on the whole floor. -

Or you can try spraying some dry-erase board cleaner on it, and then rubbing it off with a paper towel. Worked perfectly for me! (Though I wasn't on a boat at the time ...)
