How to Change a Movie Format

The format of movie files can affect compatibility, ability to burn to disc and usefulness within media player or video editing programs. Instead of downloading different versions or uploading the same video from a camera, you can easily use the WinAvi conversion program to convert your file to the desired format. The program is easy to use and features a simple interface for novice computer users.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the WinAvi program. The main program interface includes four main conversion settings: "WMV", "AVI", "DVD" and "RM". Two other options allow you to convert and burn movie files directly to a DVD.

    • 2

Click on the "WMV" icon to change the movie format to Windows Media Video. This format is used for content playable in Windows Media Player or for easy downloading and streaming online.

    • 3

Click on the "AVI" setting to convert files to the AVI video format. This is a high-quality format that is good for burning DVDs or for editing in high-end programs like Adobe Premiere.

    • 4

Click on the "DVD" icon to convert videos to MPEG format or direct DVD disc formats. You can also convert movie files to Video CDs or Super Video CDs using this icon as well.

    • 5

Click on the "RM" format to convert formats to RealMedia. This low-sized file format is only playable in RealPlayer, but it is also useful on the Internet.

    • 6

Choose the video file you want to convert when you select a format. Windows Explorer will load; use the shortcut links to quickly find the video files or use the drop-down menu to scroll through and find the files.

    • 7

Click on the "Browse" link to choose an output file directory. The desktop or "My Documents" folders are the easiest places to locate the files after they have been converted. If you choose the same folder as the original file, you may get the two files mixed up, so it is easier to select a different folder.

    • 8

Click on "Output Format" to choose a file format type. For example, if you convert to a "DVD", you can select the "MPEG", "VCD", "DVD" or "SVCD" options.

    • 9

Press the "OK" button to start the conversion process. The progress bar details how much is completed. Click on the small preview box to see how much of the video has been converted.
