How to Get an Apprentice Electrician License
Electricians undergo years of training before they are authorized to operate on their own. Someone looking to become an electrician will start as an apprentice, learning the ropes of the trade by working under a master electrician. Apprentices may be required to obtain a license or identification card, depending on their state.

Complete the basic education required by your state. Generally this means a high school diploma or equivalent, such as a GED, unless you're enrolled in a high school apprenticeship program. You may be required to complete an algebra course.

Obtain your driver's license, if required.

Obtain three character references from teachers, friends or employers who know you well and can attest to your attributes, such as being motivated, eager to learn, patient or punctual.

Go to the website of your state's licensing department to obtain an apprentice electrician application. You may be able to submit your application online, as long as you don't need to attach any additional paperwork.

Fill out the application. Depending on the state, you may need to include a recent photograph of yourself and the signature of your supervising master electrician, as well as his license number.

Submit the application fee with your application to your licensing department.
