How to Speed Up a Torrent

Torrents are files that can be run with BitTorrent client programs in order to share other types of files such as movies, music and programs with other users across the Internet. Torrent downloads are downloaded in small pieces from many different users. The speed of torrent downloads is dependent on many different factors such as the number of people sharing the file you want, the upload speed of the people sharing the file, and your own computer's Internet speed and settings. There are several different steps you can take to try to increase your download speeds.

Instructions

    • 1

Eliminate all network traffic other than your torrent download. If you or others on your network are using the Internet it can lower your download speed.

    • 2

Find a different torrent for the same file. Many popular files have several different versions available for download with torrents. Choosing a torrent with a high number of peers will likely increase your download speed since you will have more people to download it from.

    • 3

Reduce the number and speed of uploads you allow on your BitTorrent client program using the programs options or preferences menu. Reducing the number of upload connections can leave more bandwidth available for downloading; in some cases, however, download speed will be limited if you set your upload speed too low. Try playing with the upload settings to find what works best for your program.

    • 4

Increase the amount of simultaneous connections for downloading in the options menu of your BitTorrent client. If your number of simultaneous connections per torrent is set too low, it can limit your download speed.

    • 5

Try running the torrent in a different BitTorrent client. Some BitTorrent clients work better than others; popular programs include uTorrent, Bitcomet and Transmission. You can download these from the "Resources" link below.

    • 6

Turn off firewalls. Firewall programs can block connections used by BitTorrent clients and reduce download speed.

Tips & Warnings

  • * If a certain file is old or unpopular, it may only be shared by a few people and may not have other versions to download. In this case there may not be much you can do to increase your download speed.

  • * Upgrading your internet speed by getting a new ISP or a better plan from your current ISP is the easiest way to increase speed by a large amount quickly.
