How to Make Fire Starter Bricks

Lighting fires has been a challenge throughout the ages. But you do not have to be a Boy Scout to light a fire with easy-to-make fire starters. The process can be hazardous, so adult supervision is a must. Your work area should be free of any clutter. Do not do this in the house; adequate ventilation is required.

  • Cupcake pan liners
  • Old pot
  • Old metal percolator or pouring pot

Instructions

    • 1

Organize your work area with everything in reach, particularly the fire extinguisher. Put a few inches of water in the bottom of the old pot. Break the paraffin block into small chunks and put them in the pouring pot. Place the pouring pot into the water. As the water heats, it will melt the wax.

    • 2

While the wax is melting, lay out the cupcake pan and place a liner in each hole. Alternately, lay out two or three of the toaster oven liners.

    • 3

Fill each cupcake liner approximately halfway with sawdust or spread a layer of sawdust even with the top edge of the liner tin.

    • 4

Put on your gloves, apron and safety glasses. Pour wax into each opening to a level just below the top surface of the sawdust. The wax will soak into the top layer.

    • 5

Let the bricks cool to the touch then place them in containers for storage. If you used the toaster oven tins, cut the brick into 1-by-2-inch pieces and store in a cool, dry place.

Tips & Warnings

  • To use, simply place a match to the edge of the brick or light the cupcake liner paper.

  • Hot wax is very flammable; do not expose it to open flame.

  • Wear safety glasses, gloves and an apron to protect your body and clothing.
