However, do not get discouraged and go buy a new couch; the couch and especially the cushions may easily be recovered to look brand new. 1
Find an identical match for the current fabric on your couch or a close match that complements the rest of the couch without looking tacky. Remove the cushions and look for excess strips of material on the couch. Cut a small square of this extra fabric to use to help you find an exact match or a complementing fabric with which to recover the couch cushions.

2
Remove the foam cushion or stuffing from the cushion covers. Most likely, all you will have to do for this step is unzip the cushion cover and pull the cushion out; though for some cushions you may have to cut open the seams to remove the cushion pad. Save the old covers in case replacement material cannot be found, and to use the old covers as patterns for the new covers.

3
Measure the width and length of the material of the old covers; measure from seam to seam across the width and length of the cushion covers. If the cushion is not square shaped and has that signature petal at the end, remember to measure this piece as well in order to fit the old cushion pad back into the new cushion cover.

4
Cut the new fabric into the sizes and shapes you need to cover the couch cushion pad. Remember to add at least 1/2 inch for a seam allowance on all sides. Draw the cutting pattern on the backside of the fabric.
-
5
Lay both the printed sides of the fabric against each other and begin sewing a ½-inch seam around the edges of the fabric pieces. Leave an entire side open, preferably where the back of the cushion will go, so that you can slide the cushion pad or stuffing into the new cover.
-
6
Sew the zipper onto the side you have left open. Place the cushion pad into the new cover, zip the cover closed and replace the cushion onto your couch.
