How to Engrave a Rose on Glass
Glass engraving is the process of using an electric tool to carve words or designs into glass objects. Glass engraving is an art form that takes practice to master. It requires skill, patience and just the right amount of pressure to create the design without shattering the glass. The results are truly beautiful designs that turn a plain piece of glass into a work of art. Almost any type of design can be engraved into glass, with roses being a very popular design choice.

1
Locate a picture of a rose to use as a template. Children's coloring books are great places to find pictures. You can also look for rose templates online.
-
2
Print the rose image out onto a piece of plain printer paper. If the image is a printed picture, simply make a copy of it, or scan it into a computer before printing.
-
-
3
Using scissors, cut out the rose design from the paper. The design does not need to be cut out perfectly.
-
4
Attach the rose picture to the underside or inside of the piece of glass using tape. If engraving a flat piece of glass, attach it to the bottom. If engraving a curved surface, such as a wine glass, place the picture on the inside of the glass.
-
5
Clear a flat surface on which to perform the engraving. Make sure there is adequate lighting nearby.
-
6
Lay a piece of black cloth over the surface. The black color makes the delicate glass etching stand out more.
-
7
Insert a small diamond bit into the glass engraver. Plug the glass engraver into an electrical socket and turn it on.
-
8
Place the engraver tip onto an outer edge of the rose design and lightly drag it along the lines. Start at any section desired, but do not lift the engraver until reaching the intersection of two lines.
-
9
Continue etching until the entire rose pattern has been transferred to the glass.
-
10
Wipe the glass surface with a damp towel to remove all traces of dust.
