How to Apply for a Job at the DMV

Stimulus money filtering down to the states often translates into job opportunities, and the Department of Motor Vehicles is a good place to look. Working in state government offers health benefits ranking amongst the best, 401k plans, pensions and paid holiday and vacation time. Salaries may not compete with the private sector, but there is a stronger sense of job security within the public service sector, and aiding your community can be a rewarding way to make a living.

Apply online for a position with the DMV. Use the library for Internet access if you can't do this at home. Most states offer a link on their DMV home page for employment opportunities. If your state does not offer a link, like New York, type "employment" into the site's search engine, and you should be redirected to a Civil Service Employment Opportunity page. Here is where you can find employment opportunities with the DMV.

The Department of Motor Vehicles offers a variety of jobs, many of which do not require a college degree. A high school diploma and a valid driver's license are all you need for positions such as window clerk. Road testers require a longer period of training, since you would be required to properly evaluate prospective drivers.

Once you've decided what position, or positions, for which you would like to apply, the Department of Motor Vehicles will prompt you to download the application. A PDF reader is required to do this. Most computers come equipped with Acrobat Reader. If yours doesn't, just search online for Acrobat Reader and download the free version.
