How to Make Foam Pirate Hats

Whether dressing as a pirate for Halloween or a costume party, or throwing a pirate-themed party, the pirate hat is essential. However, sometimes it seems that you have to choose between a pirate hat that's well made but expensive, or one that's inexpensive but made out of flimsy materials like paper. It's easy to make your own pirate hats out of craft foam. These hats are so simple to make that, not only can they be sent home as party favors, but the children can help make them as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut out a piece of black craft foam that is 3 inches wide and long enough to wrap around the child's head. Glue together both short edges of this piece of foam.

    • 2

Cut a triangle out of black craft foam that is 10 inches wide at the base and 6 inches tall in the middle.

    • 3

Using the white craft foam, cut out a circle that is 2 inches in diameter. To make it into a skull, draw two dots for eyes and a triangle for a nose. Glue the skull onto the middle of the black triangle.

    • 4

Cut out two rectangles of white craft foam that are each 1/2-inch wide and 3 inches long. Glue these rectangles in an "X" formation directly below the skull on the hat.

    • 5

Glue three feathers behind the triangle and glue the triangle to the band formed in step 1.

Tips & Warnings

  • Have an adult assist children with the hot glue gun to avoid burns.
