How to Make a Wax Mold
Lost wax casting is the process where you create a wax mold to shape metal for jewelry or sculpture. The molds can only be used once but can be used to create fine detail in your project. You will need to carve jeweler's wax into the shape you desire for your mold. The process takes many years to master but can yield some very nice results. Blue jeweler's wax is considered the most forgiving material to use.

1
Cut off a chunk of wax using the saw. Blue wax comes in a long cylinder that you need to cut apart.

2
Carve your design out of the wax. Start by shaving the wax to a little larger than the piece you are creating. Then carve the fine details. This is an exact replica of what you want to use the wax mold for so any raised surfaces on your wax mold will be raised on your final piece. Also, any depression you make in the wax will be depressed in the final version.

File the wax until the design is smooth. By using jeweler's files you can file small details into your piece.

Tips & Warnings
You can always add the wax back into the mold if you make a mistake. Once you have a finished mold you can send it to a caster to cast it in metal.
