How to Keep a Neighbor's Dog Away From Your Yard

Everyone wants to live in a neighborhood that is filled with harmony. This can be difficult when your neighbor is allowing his dog to run rampant in your yard, defecating and digging up your lawn and garden. It can be difficult to solve a delicate situation, especially when the person might also be a good friend as well as a neighbor. There are ways to make your yard a dog free zone and keep on good terms with your neighbor.

Talk to your neighbor. Ask him to keep the dog on a leash, or at least be willing to come clean up the feces in your yard if this is a problem.

    • 2

Build a fence. Robert Frost wrote, "Good fences make good neighbors." This is especially true when that neighbor won't keep his dog out of your yard. Make sure the fence is tall enough so the dog cannot jump it and sturdy enough so the dog cannot simply run through it.

Remove any food from your yard, including any pet food or bird seed you may be keeping outside. These are only attracting the dog to your lawn.

    • 4

Install a motion detecting sprinkler. When an unwanted dog enters your yard, the sprinkler will let out a short burst of water that will frighten the dog. Eventually, the dog will begin to associate your yard with this irritant and will stay away.

    • 5

Spay your female dog, if you have one. The natural attraction toward a dog in heat is too much for a male dog to endure, and he will naturally want to enter your yard.

Contact your local dog warden or the police. This is a last resort if your neighbor is not willing to cooperate after attempting to reason with him.
