How to Copy Audiobooks to iPod

When it comes to their iPod, some people only add the obvious content--music, videos, games and photos. One feature that is sometimes overlooked is the iPod's ability to play audiobooks--the new version of books on tape--meaning that no matter how busy your life gets, if you add audiobooks to your iPod you'll be able to keep up with your reading without actually taking the time to sit down and read. And with the amount of storage space available on today's iPods--between 2GB and 160GB as of December 2009--there's plenty of room for contents of all kinds.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert your audiobook CD in your computer's CD drive. If iTunes doesn't automatically launch when your computer starts reading your CD, open it as you would with any other program.

    • 2

Click on the "Import CD" button in the lower right-hand corner of the iTunes interface.

    • 3

Use the supplied dock connector to USB cable to connect your iPod to your computer. When your computer starts reading your iPod, an iPod icon will appear in the device list. The device list is located on the left side of iTunes, below the "Library" and "Store" options.

    • 4

Click on "Audiobooks" under "Library" in the left control panel of iTunes. This will bring up a list of all of the chapters of the audiobook that you just uploaded.

    • 5

Click "Edit" in the main control menu at the top of iTunes.

    • 6

Scroll down to and click "Select All," which will highlight all of the chapters of your audiobook.

    • 7

Click on one of the highlighted chapters and drag your audiobook to the iPod icon in the device list. When the audiobook is ready to copy, the iPod icon will light up, at which time you should release the mouse to copy the audiobook to your iPod.

Tips & Warnings

  • To skip from chapter to chapter while listening to your audiobook, press the forward or backward button on your iPod's click wheel.

  • If you want to adjust the speed at which your audiobook is read, you have to download it through iTunes or audible.com. Audiobooks that you upload from CDs do not have this option.
