How to Care for a Chia Pet

Chia Pets are clay figurines in the shape of an animal. Chia is a plant that originates from Mexico. The chia is grown on top of the Chia Pet to make the Chia Pet look like it has fur. Chia Pets make an excellent gift for people of all ages, but are especially helpful in teaching younger children about growing plants. Chia plants must be properly cared for just like other plants, or they will die.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a large bowl with water and then immerse your Chia Pet in it. The Chia Pet must be completely covered by the water. Set it aside for 24 hours.

    • 2

Pour a quarter of a cup of water into a small bowl and add the Chia seeds. Wait 15 minutes. Mix the two ingredients together and then set the small bowl aside with the large bowl for the 24-hour period.

    • 3

Remove your Chia Pet from the bowl of water. Notice the grooves that go around the Chia Pet. Spread your seeds from the small bowl over these grooves. Children can use their fingers, but adults may prefer to place the seeds using a butter knife.

    • 4

Fill your Chia Pet with water. Make sure you set it inside the drip tray first as some of the water may leak out.

    • 5

Check your Chia Pet every 12 hours. Add more water at that time because you want the Chia Pet to stay full of water. You should begin to see sprouts in three to five days.

    • 6

Set your Chia Pet near a window that gets a lot of sun.

    • 7

Continue to monitor water levels and sun exposure to ensure that your Chia Pet continues to grow.

    • 8

Trim your Chia Pet with a pair of scissors when its sprouts become too long. This is especially fun for children.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your Chia Pet begins to look fuzzy on the outside, squirt it with some water.

  • If the air in your house is dry, you will need to create a greenhouse for your Chia Pet. This will help the seeds to grow. Make a stand that goes over the Chia Pet and then wrap plastic wrap around it to form a tent. You only need to do this until the seeds begin to sprout.
