How to Build a Shoe Storage Bench
A shoe storage bench can be an excellent addition to any house or apartment, especially those lacking space, and can be used to efficiently store all kinds of things. A storage bench clears up the entryway of a home or a messy closet, and provides comfortable seating to remove or put on your shoes. A shoe storage bench is relatively easy to build. It is similar to building a bookshelf but with smaller shelves and lower in height.
Things You'll Need
- Three sheets ¾-inch plywood
- Miter saw
- Straight edge
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- 12 ½-guage, 1 1/4-inch finishing nails
- Hammer
- Nail set
- Wood putty
- Wood paint or stain
- Paintbrushes, rollers or spray cans

1
Cut the plywood into the widths and lengths to construct the bench. Two pieces measuring 15-inches tall by 1-foot wide for the sides. Two, 1-foot by 5-feet for the top and bottom, and a single 15-inches by 5-feet piece for the back.
-
2
Cut the pieces for the storage shelves. Cut two pieces 14 1/4-inches long by 1-foot wide; one piece 40-inches long by 1-foot wide; and six rectangular pieces measuring 7 1/8-inches by 1-foot. While making the cuts in both this step and Step 1, use a straight edge with a built-in tape measure to measure, draw and cut 90-degree corners.

3
Construct the outer frame (the top, bottom and sides) of the shelf. Take the two 15-inch by 12-inch pieces and two 12-inch by 5-feet pieces. Sit each of these pieces up on a skinny ¾-inch wide edge and create a rectangular shape by nailing the pieces together at the corners.
-
4
Leave the nail heads sticking 1/8-inch out from the pieces, and then use the nail set to sink or bury the nail heads below the wood surface.
-
5
Install the larger, vertical shelf sides. Slide the two 14 1/4-inch by 1-foot pieces into the rectangular frame. Place the pieces each 10-inches from the short ends of the frame. Drive nails down through the top and up through the bottom pieces and into the narrow 3/4-inch thick edges of these pieces.
-
6
Install the central, horizontal shelf. Slide the 40-inch long piece into the frame. This piece will sit perpendicular to the two pieces installed in the previous step, and also sit midway between the top and bottom of the bench. To permanently install this piece, drive the skinny nails through the pieces installed in the previous step and into the edges of the 40-inch piece.
-
7
Break the two long, horizontal shelves into three pieces. Slide the six remaining small wooden pieces into the spaces above and below the 40-inch piece. The pieces should be set approximately 10-inches apart. Drive the nails either through the top or the bottom and into the piece. After this is complete, place the last, large piece on top and drive nails through this back piece and into the edges of each piece of the storage bench. .
