How to Make Non Skid Socks

Throughout the long winter season many individuals find respite from the outside cold by bundling up in their favorite winter clothing. One article of clothing that keeps the chill out is a nice pair of comfortable socks. However, it is important to consider that for some individuals, such as for young children and individuals with wood or laminate floors, the right type of socks are necessary to help prevent falling on the slippery floors. Creating and wearing homemade nonskid socks is a good way to both stay warm and prevent dangerous falls from occurring.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover the work area with newspaper or another type of drop cloth to protect surrounding surfaces from paint exposure.

    • 2

Place the cardboard flat on the floor. Place your left foot on the cardboard piece and trace the outline of your foot with a marker. It does not need to be perfect since this will simply serve as a pattern to place inside the sock while applying the paint. On a separate piece of cardboard repeat this process for your right foot.

    • 3

Cut the two patterns from the cardboard with a pair of scissors. Place the patterns inside the desired socks just as you would your foot. This will create a smooth surface on the bottom of the sock to work with. It will also outline the size of your foot so that you will know where to apply the paint to.

    • 4

Apply the fabric paint to the bottoms of the socks. Fabric paints are available for purchase at most craft supply stores and come in a variety of colors. Paints that come in squeezable tubes are ideal for this project. The paint can be applied in any desired pattern using dots, circles, or lines that are wavy or straight. Allow the paint to dry according to the directions listed on the package.

    • 5

Remove the cardboard patterns from the socks after the paint has had adequate drying time.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is not necessary to decorate the pair of socks identically. For a fun twist, try using different colors and patterns on the two different socks. The socks will be more or less slip resistant based upon the amount of paint that is applied to the bottoms.
