How to Prepare Greek Gyro Meat
Greek gyros are the Mediterranean version of a taco or egg roll. They often consist of a bread-like pita, wrapped around spiced meat, vegetables and a yogurt-based dressing. The gyro meat inside is flavored with savory spices and herbs. It can consist of lamb, beef or poultry, either ground up or in strips. Although there is a standard combination of spices, herbs and other flavors, the mixture you choose depends on your own preferences. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- One pound of your chosen meat, ground or cut in strips
- Stove
- Pan
- Olive oil
- Onion
- 3 cloves of garlic
- ½ teaspoon cumin
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon oregano
- ½ teaspoon rosemary
- Egg
- ½ cup breadcrumbs

Place a pan on the stove. Pour 2 tbsp. of olive oil into the stove and turn the heat on medium.

Chop up an onion and a few cloves of garlic and cook on the stove until the onion and garlic are clear.

Combine the meat, onion, garlic and spices.

Incorporate an egg and breadcrumbs, if the meat is ground. Form the ground meat into balls. Cook on the stove, over medium heat. Add additional olive oil if necessary.

If the meat is in strips, place the strips in the pan and sauté over medium heat for five minutes. Check the center of your thickest piece of meat. If you are using poultry, be sure the juices run clear. If not, continue cooking. For beef or lamb, check that the center of the meat is no longer pink, unless you prefer rarer meat. Remove the meat from the pan and add to your gyro dish.
