How to Change the Domain Controller Name

The domain controller (DC) on a network is the main server that hosts permissions and security authentication on a Windows 2003 network. The DC was introduced in Windows NT and persists as a main server in any medium- to large-sized network. When a user logs into the domain, the credentials are checked with the DC. The DC then sets the permissions for the user on the network. When installing a Windows server operating system, you are prompted for a name to give to the server. However, you can change that name in the system properties.

Instructions

    • 1

Log in to the domain controller using an administrator account. Changing the DC name requires administrative rights.

    • 2

Right-click the "My Computer" icon on the desktop. From the menu items, select "Properties." This opens a configuration window.

    • 3

Click the "Computer Name" tab. Click the "Change" button. Click the "OK" button at the warning screen.

    • 4

Enter a new name in the dialog box. Press the "OK" button. A dialog window appears asking you to enter the password for the domain administrator account. Enter the credentials and click the "OK" button.

    • 5

Reboot the domain controller for the changes to take effect.

Tips & Warnings

  • Only Windows Server 2003 DCs have the ability to be renamed.
