How to Put Movies on My Nintendo DS

The Nintendo Dual Screen (DS) handheld entertainment system is a versatile little machine. In addition to running Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance games, the device allows adventurous users to run a host of other content. If you are willing to purchase a little extra equipment and jump through a few hoops, your Nintendo DS can be turned into a portable movie player, to watch video content on the go or in between gaming sessions.

Instructions

    • 1

Download Moonshell and DPG Tools. Moonshell is a "homebrew" Nintendo DS application that allows users to package a variety of content types for running on Nintendo DS. DPG (a combination of DS and the file format MPEG) is the format that your movie files will be converted to for use on Nintendo DS, and DPG Tools facilitates that conversion. Download this software and extract all files to your computer, taking note of the extract location.

    • 2

Download the DLDI (Dynamically Linked Disc Interface) file for your Nintendo DS flash card (see Resources). Extract this file to Moonshell's "DLDI" folder. Download the DLDI Graphic User Interface (see Resources). This will allow you to install the DLDI file to your card. Unzip this to the same directory in which Moonshell is installed.

    • 3

Plug your Nintendo DS flash card into your computer. Navigate to the Moonshell directory and run the file "setup.exe." Follow the instructions to specify the location and model of your flash card. Once you have given Moonshell the required information, it will install the software to your flash card.

    • 4

Run the DPG Encoder. This is part of DPG Tools and should have been unzipped to your Moonshell directory already. If not, it is contained in the "MoonShell Win Tools" ZIP file under the filename "DPGENC.EXE". DPG Encoder will ask you to specify a video to be converted. Within the encoder, specify the video file you want to watch on your Nintendo DS. Specify the location for the file to be converted to and click "Start." Wait for the video file to convert. Depending on the size of the original video, this could take a while.

    • 5

Copy the converted DPG video to your Nintendo DS flash card. Eject and remove the flash card from your computer and plug it into your Nintendo DS. Turn on your Nintendo DS. The installed software will allow you to navigate to the video file and start it playing by pressing the "A" button.
