How to Restore Files From Vista Backup to External Drive
The improved Backup and Restore Center included with Windows Vista allows you to schedule your backups to fit your computer use. According to Microsoft.com, the improved Backup and Restore Center also enables backups to be saved to network locations. The Backup and Restore tools of Windows Vista also make it easier to restore your files and give you more control over how your files are restored.

Plug your external hard drive into a wall outlet if it uses a power cord. Connect the external drive to your computer. Windows Vista will automatically detect and add the external hard drive to its installed drives.

Click the start button and select the "Control Panel" in Windows Vista. Choose the "System and Maintenance" option.

Click "Backup and Restore Center" to see the backup options available in Windows Vista.

Click the "Advanced Restore" link located under the "Restore Files" button. This will open the Windows Vista restore options.

Click "Advanced Restore." Click "Continue" if prompted by the User Account Control pop-up.

Select your restore option. Click "In the following location" to restore files to a location other than their original location on your hard drive.

Click "Browse" and select your external hard drive as the location to restore the backed up files. Verify your settings and click "Start Restore." Windows Vista will automatically restore your chosen backup files to the external hard drive.
