How to Grind Ginger for Tea

Ginger tea appeals to tea lovers both for its taste and medicinal benefits. You can make ginger tea from dried ginger or from fresh ginger. If you make ginger tea with fresh ginger, grind the ginger root with a cheese grater or microplane.   • Ginger root
  • Paring knife
  • Cheese grater or microplane
  • Cutting board
  • Teaspoon

Instructions

      Cut a section from the ginger root that is 2 to 3 inches long. Do not peel the outer skin from the ginger root.

      Hold the ginger root section in your hand so the cut edge of the section is perpendicular to the cheese grater or microplane.

      Skim the ginger root section over the sharp blades of the cheese grater or microplane along the long edge of the section, grating the ginger root over the cutting board.

      Continue grating until you have approximately 2 tsp. of ground ginger root on the cutting board.

      Scrape the ground ginger root from the cutting board and place it into the mug. Pour hot water over the ginger root to make the ginger tea.

Tips & Warnings

  • The center portions of the ginger root are fibrous and powerfully flavored. The outer portions of the ginger root are more mild and tender.
