How to Play Region 2 Movies on a DVD Player

All DVDs have a Region Code printed on the disc. This code represents where the disc is from and, more importantly, what regions of the world can view it. Although there are region-free discs that can be played anywhere and on any DVD player, they are few and far between, and generally frowned upon by the movie industry and their distributors. If you live in the United States and Canada you are in Region 1. Discs from Europe are Region 2, and cannot be played on an ordinary Region 1 DVD player. Nor can Region 1 discs be played on Region 2 players, even though Europeans may have purchased them perfectly legitimately, while on vacation in the U.S., for instance.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain a Region 2, or better yet, a region-free DVD player. You may be able to find a Region-Free DVD player at large electronics store or an online retailer you trust. A Region 2 DVD player generally must be purchased from a European electronics company.

    • 2

Connect the Region 2 or Region-Free DVD player to your television. This can be done either through a coaxial connection or RCA cable connection.

    • 3

Insert the region 2 DVD movie into the DVD player. In a moment the contents from the DVD are going to load.

    • 4

Play the movie. As you watch you may notice the video seem to look slightly different, almost more real in a sense. This is because Region 2 DVDs are made to the PAL standard, as opposed to the NTSC standard North American video utilizes. PAL video has more frames per second, so the picture is likely to appear slightly different (and arguably superior).
