How to Find Your WiFi WEP Key

Wired Equivalent Privacy is one of the most common security methods used by most routers. WEP works by having the user enter a password into the router's security settings. From there, it generates a code of random letters and numbers that people with devices with wireless networks can use when connecting to the network. If you forget your WEP numbers, you can find them with relative ease.

Things You'll Need

  • Computer connected to the router's network
  • Web browser

Instructions

    • 1

Open a web browser on a computer connected to your network.

    • 2

Connect to your router using the web browser. Typically, this can be done by entering 192.168.1.1 into the address bar of your browser.

    • 3

Enter your username and password. If this is the first time you are connecting to the router, both will usually be "Admin."

    • 4

Look for a security tab on the site that appears. The tab should have the details for the router security you are using. (In this case, WEP.)

    • 5

Make a note of the WEP keys on the security tab.

Tips & Warnings

  • Write down the WEP keys on a piece of paper or print out the site they are on for safekeeping.

  • If you write down your keys, be sure to place them somewhere inconspicuous.

  • If you have forgotten your username and password for the router and don't have it handy, you will need to reset the router. Once the router resets, connect to it and enable WEP.
