How to Dye Linen White

If your having trouble finding linen in the perfect shade of white, try dyeing it. Hobby and craft stores sell a variety inexpensive dye that can be used on anything from t-shirts, paper, wood and even linen. Dyeing the linen only takes about an hour. It's best to start with an off-white or pastel color to achieve a bright white. Dyeing a black linen white will not work; use the lightest linen you have or can purchase.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear old clothes and glove to protect your hands, skin and clothing.

    • 2

Fill your washing machine with hot water. Use enough water for the linen to move freely.

    • 3

Pour the packet of dye powder and 2 cups of hot water into a large bowl to dissolve the powder. Add the liquid dye to the washing machine.

    • 4

Soak the linen in hot water prior to dyeing. Shake out the wrinkles and place the linen into the washer.

    • 5

Set the washing machine for an extended wash. The linen should be dyed in the wash for at least 30 minutes before the rinse cycle starts.

    • 6

Take the linen out when finished. Run it under warm water. Slowly, turn the water from warm to cool. The linen is finished when the water runs clear.

    • 7

      Hang the linen to dry.

    • 8

Always clean the washing machine when you are finished to avoid staining. Fill the washer with hot water and add regular detergent and bleach. Allow the washer to run for a complete cycle.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always dye the linen white, don't try to bleach it white. The bleach can cause the linen to tear, ruin or turn a yellow/cream color.
