How to Connect Your Website to IRC Chat

Internet Relay Chat, or IRC, is one of the oldest chat systems on the internet. Numerous IRC networks exist on the Internet such as Freenode, UFNet, DALnet, as well as several smaller IRC networks. IRC is useful if you want to have a chat room set up so that casual users can access the chat room, as well as more computer-savvy power users. For this reason, some networks offer a program you can put on your website to connect to IRC Chat.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a website IRC program (see Resources).

    • 2

Click "Generate Code" to open up the code generation window.

    • 3

Enter the name of the IRC channel you want to connect to. Do not worry if the channel does not exist on the network. Leave all other options as default unless you know to change them.

    • 4

Click the "Submit" button and copy the code that appears into the clipboard. If you need to use the clipboard for other things, open Notepad and paste the code into it. (Remember to copy the code again for Step 6.)

    • 5

Open the webpage you want to add chat to with your site editor.

    • 6

Paste the code into the web page and save it to your website.

    • 7

Open the website you added the chat to in the browser. The applet should start up.

Tips & Warnings

  • Supply the IRC network and chat info in another part of the page for people with IRC clients.
